Sure. Just set the ISO to a familiar speed. Most default to ISO 200 (some have ISO 100), but may adjust to a higher ISO if you leave it on auto. It sounds like you know what you are doing though, so just check the ISO and go from there.

Orion Telescopes have a great site. Check out http://www.telescope.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=29 for photo accessories to go with telescopes. You will find a couple of “universal adapters” of interest.

There is also a book about astrophotography that might be a good idea for you.

  1. the exposure time on digital slr cameras is completely variable. the Canon EOS 350D (Canons cheapest dSLR) has a shutter speed range of 30 seconds to 1/4000 second, ISO is also variable in the following steps: AUTO(400), 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600

  2. Yes they can and they are perfect for that since you have the two needed ingredients: bulb exposure and variable ISO.

    The third ingredient is a good telescope that can help you see the desired celestial body and that telescope must have a tracking motor which helps you to keep the celestial body you want to take a photo of in focus as it moves in the sky.

    Of course you’ll also need stuff like an adapter to attach your camera to the eyepiece of the telescope, a tripod for a the camera (if you use heavy lenses on the camera) to prevent the camera breaking and a cable release for the camera (for bulb exposures)
