  1. Both are correspondence schools, which sets off alarm bells. Because if you don’t get the benefit of discussing things in-depth with teachers and fellow students, what’s the benefit of taking one of those courses vs. doing it ALL on your own.
After all, these institutes both list what the course entails, and you can find tons of books and information on the internet to cover the exact same topics.
    * For a technical knowledge of cameras and photography, you could read Ansel Adam’s books ‘The Camera’ and ‘The Negative’.
    * For artistic tips and inspiration, you could browse photography books in the library.
    * For the computer skills, there are teach-yourself-Photoshop books.
    * For discussions about gear, feedback for your own pictures, and tips about the business end of things, there are sites with great user forums, like http://www.dpreview.com
So I had a look at the NYI and SCI websites and couldn’t really find the answers I was looking for. I wanted to, but the information just didn’t convince me. Then I searched for NYI on dpreview and to my surprise… well, read it yourself – a lot of people say they’re definitely worth it:

Under the FAQ section, they have this gem:
“I’ve studied photography before. Will the NYI Course be too elementary? Many NYI students tell us, when they graduate, that they took a class or two on photography in college, and that they learned much more about photography taking our Course.”
To which I thought: I should freaking hope so. It’s an 8 to 12 month course! But it seems I was being too harsh!
